David Gillingwater trained as an illustrator and graphic designer, now living near Aldeburgh on the Suffolk Coast. He is under the tutelage of portrait artist Jack Stephenson, himself a pupil of Ken Howard. He is learning to produce portraits in oils, both formal and informal. Taking great inspiration from the classical masters of the Edwardian era, David aspires to give narrative to the individuals depicted.
David’s paintings have attracted national interest and he has had work displayed in the RSMA open exhibition. He has also appeared on SKY Portrait Artist of the Year.
As part of this year’s Aldeburgh Studio Trail, David will be kindly located in the Red House Aldeburgh – Imogen Holst Room.
David will be displaying a selection of paintings, portraits (including Benjamin Britten), landscapes and still life.
